Herniated Disc

What is a herniated disc: When you are told you have a herniated disc, what is happening in the body is that the “disc”, which is made up of a rubbery jelly-like interior with a tougher exterior (and are located between each vertebrae to allow for maximal comfort and mobility), has begun to slip out of place. When a disc is herniated, what that means is that the tougher exterior of the disc has ruptured, and the soft interior begins to push out through the tear. When the disc is out of place, it begins pushing on things it shouldn’t, such as nerves. This is why pain, numbness and weakness begins to occur.

How coMra-Therapy helps: This technology is giving the body the energy it needs to heal itself. The body has a possibly infinite number of mechanisms to heal itself from any number of issues. What needs to happen with a herniated disc is to repair the tear and then have the disc come back into alignment/stop pressing on things it shouldn’t be. Something else to note about the correlation with age and disc health, is that the older our bodies get, the less water content is in these discs. As you can imagine, with less water in this jelly like cushioning, the less functional it becomes, providing decreasing amounts of comfort between the vertebrae and nerves. Multiple modalities in coMra-Therapy all help with increasing “edema” which is the fluid in the cells, which you can imagine would eventually bring this jelly cushioning disc back to its proper functionality. Energy through this technology will be delivered to the body to allow for all of the above to happen at the same time.
Time frame: For most pain related conditions, the average person feels some decrease in pain in at least the first few weeks. For some, a certain degree of noticeable relief is felt immediately following the first treatment, for others it is after a few weeks of consistent therapy; everyone is a little different. Now, with back pain, it is best to not have any expectations for the first 6 weeks. This is because our backs have a very high pain threshold, so for us to register that our backs are in pain, a lot has been going on for a while before that happens. That means that a lot of healing must occur to bring things back below that threshold. Those who are active have a good chance of experiencing relief before that 6 week mark, but it is strongly recommend to not have expectations as it is always best to be pleasantly surprised than to not have our expectations met. In terms of how long you would need treatment for, a custom protocol would be written and would consist of daily treatment for 4 weeks, take a 2 week break, then treat for 2 more weeks. Treating for 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off  would continue for the next 2 months, followed by maintenance as you see fit. However, at that 2 month mark, the goal would be that you would be able to do light activity with a significant decrease in pain at that time. It is important to not push yourself too much to ensure proper healing has occurred, but in roughly 3 months, the goal is to have you being able to do your previously regular activity with minimal to no pain.
For anyone who has already experienced issues such as herniated discs, it is also suggested to use this therapy for regular care of your spine to prevent disc herniation in the future, and to increase the health of your spine as a whole.
Studies:
  1. This study compares traction, ultrasound and laser in treatment for herniated discs and found significant improvement with all 3
  2. This study compares laser therapy and magnetic therapy for back pain and mobility
  3. Study regarding cervical disc herniation. In this study they found significant decreases of pain after 4 weeks with only 2 treatments per week. With the back (vs cervical or pain anywhere else in the body) however, Elevated Health reinforces that people should not have expectations for the first 6 weeks*
  4. Study comparing different laser frequencies, shows that all 3 variations resulted in significant improvement
